Legend of the Void 2 : the awakening of the Guardians.

At ancient times, there was only darkness, an endless void, but than the Old Gods created the world of Caldaria, a land where life could exist and grow. But the dark creatures who live at the void got jealous of Caldaria, and invaded the magic land, destroying everything. The Old Gods intervened and sent the creatures back to the abyss. And to prevent this from happening again the Gods created powerful creatures, endowed with wisdom and strength, with the mission to protect the world of Caldaria, these creatures, were named dragons!
The humans lived in harmony with the dragons for many years, and the dragons teached them to control magic. The humans created a gigantic empire, and wanted to control the world of Caldaria.They started a war against the dragons.
Guided by their own greed the humans almost extinct the dragons, and and the few who survived fled to distant lands. But the dragons were not the only ones who lost almost everything, the humans had their empire destroyed by the war.
2000 years later, the Arch Mage Gazzen summons the Void Ritual that can destroy the world of Caldaria, the mortals can't face this threat alone, they will need the help of the dragons to push the demons back. Now in charpter 2 you will need to make a journey through Caldaria to find the dragons and ask for their help.
Just an idea, that your choices in the game are going to determine if the dragons will help you or if they will just kill you for revenge.

I put Dragons as the guardians of Caldaria because I think they are cool, but it could be anything, like Gigantic Titans , or mages, angels these things.

I like the idea about the dragons who once protected the land of Caldaria, but after my opinion the background of the dragons should be different.
